Observation details
Generally rare in area but pretty usual in small numbers in winter off the NE shore of Randall's. I think this is the largest number I've seen at once. One drake off between the channel rock and Rikers with some Red-breasted Mergansers; a group of 5 off Lawrence Point. Males were displaying. Males, dark triangular heads, prominent white spot behind short bill, dark back, white underside and sides, displaying by snapping heads back and rearing up. Females brown-headed, gray-backed short-billed ducks of same size and structure. I need to get a real phone scoping setup, my photos are pretty useless although the scope view was really quite good. I may post a couple if I can salvage anything.
