Observation details
**rare; continuing immature male first found 26 March by Ted Bradford and relocated today by Lawrence Connolly, a remarkably rare bird for this area of Suffolk County and especially so in such a late date—among the later records for the state and surpassing the previous county late date of 1 Apr for Suffolk Co. Seems to maybe have a more developed full Barrow’s teardrop compared to the BOC image by Ted Bradford from 26 March; also obvious as Barrow’s by steep (almost vertical) forehead and fairly small, triangular bill. I rushed over after my 10-11am meeting and checked from the Railroad Bridge to no avail (Lawrence had reported a possible Barrow’s off the dog beach). I then heading to the SW end of the top field and was able to scope two goldeneyes—barely identifiable with a scope as an imm male Barrow’s and a female Common. I then hiked out the Secret Trail, and since I anticipated that I might need to wade out for good looks, I had on shoes that I had on to get wet. By wading out to the red maple, and going up to my thighs, I was able to get good scope views of both birds. Eventually the Barrow’s drifted around the bend of the river but 5 minutes later the pair flew right past me, at point blank range (I left my SLR in the car, alas). Since it seems like they were headed to dog beach I hustled over and had close scope view of both birds which swam right, back around the corner, and out of sight again. Amazing bird to catch up with at Millennium—I definitely thought I had missed my chance in March (after doing focused searches almost daily 5-7 days after Ted’s initial sighting)
