Observation details
Caleb did scope count by 100’s starting a minute after end of Totality. Of just the ones we could see from this one spot, (so could possibly be 10000 or more even streaming out over the spit to north of us up to the SP parking lot !! When the gulls all streamed back out to Ontario post sunset tonight, they were streaming out along length of the entire spit between here and parking lot to north of us !) Hopefully we got most of them though some starting to fly back east out to ag fields again as soon as a minute after Totality ended . Listen to recording for their vocals, you can hear the buzzing screaming mass of thousands start 3.5 min. into Totality recording! Exact count by 100’s. 5500 Caleb’s number which Courtney agrees. — — Courtney through bins counting by loose 100’s conservatively est 2300 AT LEAST on lake just after the eclipse. (Totality ended 3:26pm). Others had already flown in. Obviously Caleb could see much better and farther out more with scope. 3:33pm more now streaming back east towards WMA. Caleb scoping counting better, by 100’s quickly to try to get them before they leave, est “at least 4800 just on the water” after at least 500 more had already flown back in, says “5500 would be safe.” — — Wow!! The noise of the RBGU during the Solar Eclipse full Totality was amazing!! (Listen to recording on our 5-min. Totality checklist!) “It seems like most people, gulls, birds alike, have the reaction of screaming in some form, whether in joy or in terror when totality begins.” — — was so fun for Totality, hearing the joyful cheers of thousands of people on the Sandy Beach spit just north of us, and also these thousands of screaming gulls , all together! — — after Totality, the gulls started flying east again, it took 28-min. for gulls to stop streaming inland, to where the lake surface looked like it it did pre-Totality. — — This was such a cool, wonderful event! We feel so grateful that we got to see the Totality ring, that for those 3.5 minutes we could see it almost the entire time, not blocked by clouds. Within a few minutes of totality ending, clouds covered the sun for the entire post-totality partiality all the way out through 4:35pm. “That was a serendipitous event. Some heavenly being wanted us to see that eclipse.” * See eclipse note for more about today’s RBGU! (I wrote too much to fit both under one species, word limit.) Caleb noted that these 5000+ RBGU here today are probably the most gulls we have ever seen together. So Courtney went through her many thousands of gulls ebird records, to verify that yes we have never seen this many RBGU before, and that the number we had today is definitely the most gulls of any species Caleb has ever had, and very close to the maximum number of gulls Courtney has ever seen at once. (The bay area records were Courtney only). CKJ’s prev.
