Observation details
I flushed at least three of these while walking the trail. The person staffing the center didn't expect this species and I have only seen one distant calling bird in East Texas nearly 20 years ago. The apparent size and white stripes in the tail seemed to rule out whip-poor-will and the shape and color seemed wrong for pauraque. The birds were very rusty, large, and had white stripes in the tail when flushed as I walked the trail. The birds were really flighty and I was surprised to get any photos.
