Observation details
***Rare and early. When I first saw this bird it was resting out at the edge of the mudflat with its head tucked (at which point I wasn't even sure it was a bird). Right when the sun crested the nearest hill and flooded the bay, the bird lifted its head and I was sure this would be a GLIB given its grayish legs and thin facial skin without a broad white border. I decided to pursue for closer looks to find that the bird's facial skin was tinged pinkish, unlike the baby blue of an adult GLIB, and the eyes were slightly red. Pure WFIB eliminated b/c face is too pinkish; also, adult in alternate at this time should have redder legs (although this is somewhat variable) and white coming in around the face. Received confirmation from Steve Mlodinow on the identification of this bird as a hybrid. Number 299.5 for Wyoming.
