Observation details
Male doing Allen’s type shuttle before big J but only has a partial green back. Located here: (42.9999565, -124.4499590). Male Rufous/Allen’s with this much green on their backs appear to be common here and have been since I began point counts here back in 1996. (Which I did twice a week for 8 weeks from mid-April through mid-June from 1996-2010 for Coos Bay BLM). Maybe 60-70% green-backed, probably called an Allen’s by most birders particularly after the Allen’s type shuttle display. I noticed it did the shuttle display like 3 times back and forth but sometimes only once before going upwards and doing the J part of display- not sure if that is helpful or not? The r2 appears slightly notched to me. New River ACEC is supposably in the middle of the hybrid zone where David Rankin et al. found the most hybrids. I have seen birds that look like this all over Coos and Curry County though. I still have not photographed a male with an unnotched r2 but they must be out there. In the third photo the r2 is the feather pointing downward on left. In the fourth photo it is the wider one pointing down. Slight notch on left side of r2 as you look at photo. On 8 April 2024 I received these comments from David Rankin on the photos of this bird which I sent to him on 6 April: "That one is definitely very Allen's-like, with just a faint narrowing of r2 near the tip. If I recall correctly all the birds in this area were genetically hybrids, even if some of them did pretty much normal Allen's displays. I'm not sure what to call birds like this that are probably 90% Allen's, but likely had a Rufous ancestor at some point in the past."
