Observation details
Continuing rarity found by Russell Kokx on 7/15/23. This very worn adult was present upon arrival, perched atop a pine, preening. At approx 5:30am, the slender raptor lifted up from its perch, flying acrobatically as it caught a large dragonfly. Once captured; the bird returned to the same perch to devour its prey. It did this routine 3-4 times from this first perch, with approx 5-10 minutes in between each hunt. At approx 6:00am, the bird brought its next insect-meal to a different tree (an elm maybe?), approx 600ft south of its first perch. I watched the bird catch a couple more dragonflies, but it spent most of its time in this second tree pruning it's worn feathers. At one point, it removed a thick clutch of feathers, then picked at them for over a minute. When I left, the bird was still present in the second tree. First tree: (36.6112317, -118.0621619), second tree: (36.6097660, -118.0615215).
