Observation details
7 Occidentalis and one looking good for Fulva (probable) Since I haven't seen any Duskys for a few days these are likely the birds James and I saw fly in from IVB direction as we stood on the rim of McBig earlier This group was doc.d just S of Michell Farm Market..and west of Lochside The earlier flock flew in and landed with Mallard wigeon flock SE of Winkles When I went to check..no geese there...but these here * PS The putative Fulva looked to be slightly stockier built ..in head and body It was slightly bigger than the trio Slightly Smaller than one of the ganders in the group of 4 that was dominant Neck appeared thicker than all the Occ.,head slightly but notably bigger Had black gular stripe Very similarly sized to an adjacent outcast The adjacent Occidentalis outcast was run at a few times but although the individual in question was in proximity it was never charged that i saw I suspect this was a female Fulva and therefore in the size ovelap being bigger than most Ocidentalis especially females but being outsized by some ganders The colouration of the mantle is what may be the best indicator towards Fulva Even the 1st year Occidentalis all seem to have nice dark backs consistent with adults i suppose digging deeper into patterns of moult should be next step, but for times sake leaving notes here for now
