Observation details
Amazing numbers, possibly as many as 100 but difficult to estimate, moving around the valley for much of the time we were there. One flock of 17 flew off towards Hobuck, then another flock of 37-38 flying around and dropping in together, plus numerous small groups of 1-5 being flushed elsewhere by a patrolling harrier. Did not see or hear any that seemed like other longspur species. We would have missed them completely if they’d stayed on the ground, which makes me wonder how many other birds are hiding out there on the flats.
