Observation details
RUBL arrived much later this evening - 1st group (57 RUBL) arrived at (6:39 pm). 6:39 pm - 47 RUBL 6:42 pm - 50 RUBL / 22 / 25 / 3 / 20 6:45 pm - 2 RUBL / 23 / 9 / 16/ 19 6:48 pm - 19 RUBL / 5 / 10 / 27 / 2 / 4 6:51 pm - 8 6:54 pm - 3 RUBL 6:57 pm - 4 RUBL / this was the last flock Total = 297 RUBL (counted by 5’s and individually tonight). 7:02 pm - all RUBL disappeared into the Marsh for the night. 7:08 pm - We packed it up and headed out. RUBL did not perch on middle island - they flew to 3rd island and to 4th island the. The RUBL came in on a different trajectory (11° - almost due North) than previously observed. We observed that RUBL vocalizations had two distinct patterns tonight. Upon arrival RUBL would perch in trees on the 2nd island and sing a “kerglee” song. However, after most RUBL had come in, the vocalization changed to a “squiggle” type call; just before the flock began to fly from Islands 2 & 3 towards the final roosting area. RUBL went to roost (7:02 pm) at the same location in the marsh by the Rail Trail as reported in previous checklists. Photo courtesy of Brad Smith. Both sound recordings were captured by Gino Ellison.
