Media notes
Recorded pre-migration calls of Bar-tailed Godwits on the Whanganui River estuary. Three males and two females flew out of the estuary on a Northwest path an hour after this recording was taken. There is wind interference and sounds of Black-backed Gulls in the background. The majority of the godwit pre-flight calls are near the end of the recording.
Observation details
Three females and three males in bright breeding plumage. Incessant calling and washing in pools preceded these godwits embarking on their migration to the Yellow Sea and on to Alaskan breeding grounds. One of the females turned back and continued foraging in the exposed tidal sands. Attached below is a sample of the pre-flight migration calls of the Bar-tailed Godwits. Some wind disturbance and Black-backed Gulls in the background.
