Observation details
For a few years there's been a Blue Jay in the vicinity of Sewall Brook where it crosses Forest Street (in between the railroad tracks and the entrance to the Town Forest) that does a very creditable imitation of a Red-tailed Hawk. (I've actually been able to watch it as it calls.) I've also wondered whether a Blue Jay might be responsible for isolated calls of a Red-shouldered Hawk that I sometimes hear without being able to locate a hawk to pin them on. Attached is a recording that includes, in quick succession, the calls (or imitations of the calls) of a Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, and Red-Shouldered Hawk. The sounds were coming from a tree overlooking Sewall Brook that was very near to me, where I could find neither hide nor hair of any bird of prey. I believe the sounds were all made by a talented Blue Jay, though I'm sorry to say that I didn't actually _see_ a Blue Jay making them. There were, however, several Blue Jays in the area (and as I said, no sign of any of the hawks that seemed to be calling; it's very improbable that I failed to catch a glimpse of at least one of the three hawks that seemed to be calling so near to me). (Added later: I uploaded the file to BirdNET. It identified the calls as Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, and Red-shouldered Hawk.)
