Observation details
Floating on flooded water by the Dam. Identified on what's this Bird ABA Facebook page . Large bird. Black beak. No yellow on beak. Floated from around the point by the dam area towards me by the end of the flooded path off Bassetts Bridge road. First saw it far away as a white speck, then it floated close. Able to see clearly through binoculars then close enough to not use them and still see clearly. Long neck. Mostly white but feathers on neck a little more gray/tan, as if a little dirty. Black around eye. Very alert. Looked right at me unperturbed. Made a few (2-3 in 20 minutes) single syllable grunts/squawks but unable to create an audio record. Was only about ten yards off shore at closest point. Then it floated away towards the far end of the water area, across from boat launch. Was very serene and looking around. Not at all wary of me standing on side with my dog. Photos only from iPhone. I do have a few videos. Loaded first to the What's This Bird FB page as I was standing there watching. I'm often in this area and never saw it here before. Even was able to share it by FaceTime as I viewed it, with a more experienced birder (I'm not a longtime birder) to help identify.
