Media notes
The recording was made using the microphone on the Bluetooth headset I've begun using for Steve Colwell's BirdTalk data-entry app; an unfortunate side effect appears to be that the headset is applying filters that remove frequencies above ~8000 Hz. I'll try to avoid that in the future.
Observation details
[08:08] Continuing at the northeast corner of the park in a large bottlebrush tree near (34.406048,-119.525183). Unmistakable adult male seen well through binoculars. Small oriole, extensive black hood, black wings with light wingbars, chestnut brown body, black tail. Giving characteristic repeated "chuck" calls. Later he flew to a small live oak 10 m west of (34.406048,-119.525183), and sang a few times from there; recording attached. [08:14] Later a second individual appeared near (34.406332,-119.525831). This bird was a subadult male with a black bib, a yellow body, and some splashes of orange in the breast below the bib and in the vent area. [08:31] I believe both of these birds have been continuing in this area since at least February 28; see my checklist from March 4, which has photos of what appear to be the same two birds: https://ebird.org/checklist/S163697351.
