Observation details
They kept flying by in waves, east to west, not too far from shore, and many diving while flying. Singly or in groups of up to five. Very windy, rough waves, overcast. Mostly brown and/or brown & white mottled immature birds with white rump patches, but about 30 white adults. I couldn't spot any that weren't either unmistakably white adults with black wingtips or subadults with white uppertail coverts. No double counting because I watched all of them disappear to the west. Likely many more that I couldn’t see because of the rough surf and their tendency to sometimes fly low to the waves. Originally counted 158, took a rain break for 15 minutes in my car, and returned to count 8 more.
