Observation details
Ongoing overwintering bird along the railroad tracks. Just for fun, I decided to switch things up a bit for my investigative playback efforts. Whereas yesterday afternoon I began with western ridgwayi song and then followed with eastern ruficapilla, today I started by trying ruficapilla song at the bird’s preferred hangout at the Bangladesh Hindu Mandir temple on 44th Avenue. There was no response. When I eventually switched to tape of ridgwayi, I was instantly met with an agitated series of sharp, metallic chip notes from two bushes away, where the warbler had evidently been sitting unperturbed by several rounds of ruficapilla song. It popped out into the open and changed perches several times while actively searching for the phantom challenger, before eventually settling in for a brief preen in the sunlight before heading out again, chipping all the way. Periodic tail flicks were most notable when the bird changed position. Photos and audio obtained for later review
