Observation details
This perched juvenile bird was a very difficult ID for me. Separating this from juv. Broad-winged Hawk was the challenge. I based my ID on 3 different things. 1) It appeared taller and thinner than what I would expect a shorter and somewhat stockier appearance to be of a Broad-winged Hawk. 2) The streaks on the front of this bird were thin, light brown/reddish colored and the breast was filled in with them. A Broad-winged Hawk would show darker colored streaks and would usually not be filled in completely in the breast, (most of the time). 3) The overall color of the back/upper side of this bird was lighter brown than what I would expect to see on a juv. Broad-winged Hawk. One other thing- I, myself have never seen a Broad-winged Hawk in VT during the month of March. I do however know that others have. It seems a bit early to see one. . .
