Observation details
A subspecies of the Northern Rough-winged Swallow restricted to the Yucatan Peninsula (Howell, S.N. G., & Webb, S. 1995), but is much different than the nominate subspecies. Could be a species. Its range boundaries along with its status in northern Belize are not quite understood, especially during the time of this record. We found a local resident population of 50-75 birds at the La Milpa Field Station in RBCMA, where we confirmed breeding. The Field Station is an open, grassy clearing with scattered shrubby trees, along with 10-year-old Mahoganies. The birds were confirmed to be Ridgeway’s not Northern due to the 2 white supraloral spots, and dark brown distal undertail coverts appearing as if the undertail coverts are squared. Breeding records in Belize come from crevices in limestone karsts, which is limited in northwestern Belize compared to the south (Jones, H.L 2003). We found them constructing cup nests of grass and small sticks underneath the dormitory and education center buildings on the ledge of the foundation.
