Observation details

From roadside, Richard spotted distant male on a prominent perch. Rodrigo then led us into forest patches to spots offering views of perches routinely used by the calling males. We watched one male in particular, moving between two perches 15 meters apart at intervals of 5 to 10 minutes. He perched on a prominent dead branch at tree top level, and gave the three-part song (see recordings), moving to face in different directions. At one point we saw a female in the calling tree (down in foliage), immediately approached by 2 males. For several seconds they sort of danced around each other, then departed in different directions. Rodrigo has seen copulations here during these months, although females do not leave for nesting grounds until May.
