Media notes
Crested Auklets flying north off Cape Nosappu, Hokkaido, Japan. Video starts at 08:55:37 JST and about 120 auklets are seen.
Observation details
261,600 estimated based on 30 second count periods as follows: 800 @ 09:45, 1200 @ 09:49, 1400 @ 09:51, 1100 @ 09:53, 950 @ 09:55. Passage rate estimated as 2,180/ minute for 120 minutes. Flocks were flying north to north-northwest through strait between Cape Nosappu and the Habomai Islsnds. Several flocks also flew south at times, but a tiny fraction of the total. Additional notes added in the evening: The rate of passage was the same over the entire duration of 120 minutes. At the time, we discussed this and compared our own estimates. We felt that the rate of passage was perhaps even greater before we began timed counts, with, for example, single flocks estimated at 1,500 (GRG) and several of 500+ in the first hour. LRB recorded 15 short videos focused on flocks near to shore. Three of those are included in media for this event.
