grassland habitat of Ocellated Crake
Observation details
Seen by group. Photos to add after trip. Also heard by group. Leandro and Juan Diego spent 20 minutes preparing the site - cutting a path in the shin- to knee-high grass, ending in a "tunnel" or bower, roofed-over by grass, about 2 feet in diameter. Mealworms (or some live food) placed there. Our group was arranged in grass about 15 meters distant, slightly upslope. Recordings were played. We sat in sun for about 30 minutes before one bird appeared. From my viewpoint, it walked about from one side, pecked at a worm, and continued "off stage right" - about a 2 second look. Steve saw it a second time, farther back in the background.
