Observation details
This little guy had me going -- some of the toots were very clear like a NOPO toot, but most were strained, as if it was hoarse, and sounded somewhat like a Mountain Quail. Merlin wouldn't even guess what it was and BirdNET gave a higher estimate for MOQU than for NOPO. The bird called repeatedly for 20 minutes or so in the tops of trees in a densely forested valley (i.e., not MOQU habitat). Finally, I got eyes on it in a tree top continuing to make toots that sometimes were more like a MOQU.
