Media notes
adult male and female Harlequin Duck with Western Gull
Observation details
While scoping offshore I spotted the continuing adult male and female pair out beyond the large rock and surf off the northern point of the main cove accessed from the Fig Tree parking area. They were both actively diving but spent a lot more time on the surface between dives than the previously seen Marbled Murrelets. These were two small ducks (compared to an adjacent Western Gull) and although distant I could easily make out the brownish plumage of the female and the white spot behind the ear coverts and broad white vertical slash on the face at the base of the small bill. The same features were noted on the male plus the white lines on both side of the breast/shoulder. I was less able to judge the color of the males sides and back. I managed a few distant photos that confirm the ID.
