Observation details
I first heard this call from about 200m away. As I got nearer it was obvious this was a large raptor, apparently singing from the canopy of a large (35+m) Ceiba pentandra tree, but dense subcanopy of Garcinia did not allow viewing of the bird. These calls are nothing like the more common species (Spizaetus spp) that I hear frequently. After extensive searching online and consulting other people I came to the conclusion it is this species. Best comparison is in xeno-canto (XC276065), especially towards end of recording. Along La Cangreja trail, in dense, old growth forest. I did not add this species before because I was researching ID to be sure.
