Observation details
#54 County lifer. This bird is the exact reason why I despise the white-cheeked geese. I'm physical size, nearly identical to nearby Lesser Canadas, perhaps marginally smaller, so an ID based on size would have never occurred. But this goose had an undeniable Cackling bill, short, stubby, and triangular. Also, it didn't associate with any particular Canada individuals, though with them, he transverse from the group to group while family groups of Canada stayed together. Photos both on water and in flight. #3/3/2024 Update: I downloaded my photos from this trip, and it appears there were Cackling geese than the one Mary spotted for us. I didn't have my scope on me, so I was making judgements purely by binos, but likely I did have my camera, and it captured geese I overlooked. One photo, which I'll post immediately, has at least 7 Taverner's mixed with, and I likely missed them due to the amount of Lesser Canada present. For guidance in understanding the photo: Red arrows = Taverner's Cackling Purple arrows = Migrant Lesser Canada Green arrows = Resident Western Canada
