Observation details
Bill Cleveland, Tracy Cleveland, and I were birding up Route 10 in Sharon Springs. As we drove by Bowmaker Pond on our right, there was an all black duck with an orange nob on its bill, sitting on the water only 30-40 feet away from the road. We backed up and were stunned to find a gorgeous male Black Scoter just sitting there. Bill Cleveland took a photo of the bird and shared the printout with me, which I have to this day (2/28/2024, the date of entry for this record). Unmistakable. While not a life bird at the time, certainly a life look at one.
