Observation details
This individual had rufous tones and a green back, and I initially pegged it for an Allen's. But it started vocalizing a lot, and it sounded different to Allen's, with none of their buzzy, insect-like noises. (I'm still learning to bird by ear, but I've listened to a lot of Allen's in SoCal recently, and successfully identified one by sound earlier on this trip.) I used Merlin, and it gave me rufous. Couldn't get a clean look at the tail. I'm often skeptical of Merlin but the app repeatedly IDd the bird over the span of a couple of minutes. Some recordings attached. The short clip is very faint. The longer one is clearer but has a lot of junk in it. The bird I think is a rufous can be heard from 00:18 to 00:23, 00:33 to 00:37, 01:02 to 01:09, 01:14 to 01:18, 1:23 to 1:26, 1:30 to 1:35, 1:41 to 1:48, and more.
