Observation details
Tiny, short-tailed terns hovering just over the surface of the water searching for food. From a distance clearly slaty gray above, and lighter below. We boated in for a closer look to confirm they were not White-winged Terns (WWTE). Underwings dark gray, unlike the pale underwings of WWTE. Bill longer than WWTE. Prominent helmet appearance with a distinct dark spur cutting into the sides of the breast from the shoulder. Flanks smudgy grayish. Photos.
