Media notes
We observed crossbills as they were vocalizing.
Observation details
Continuing crossbills found by John Sterling and Todd Easterla. Found today by Rosie Howard. Seen foraging in a small pine, south side of cemetery, east of main entrance road near (32.7897112, -115.5177919); also visited adjacent pines. Reddish male and yellow female with dark wings. Perhaps bulkier than House Finch with gray bill with crossed tips. Foraging on tree pinecones in the same tree while quietly vocalizing with each other. Louder in flight. Photos and recordings. Update: Recording confirmed type 2 "kip" vocalizations showing a "kink" in sonogram. Thanks to Lance Benner for reviewing audio file. This is likely the first time Red Crossbills have been recorded and "typed" in Imperial County (first in ebird and first that Guy knows about).
