Observation details
We are not sure how to count the birds encountered during this magic hour. Possibly as few as three birds but anywhere up to eight birds is realistically possible. Four is a safe conservative estimate. Initially heard calling (first call in PK Birds). Birds reacting off each other. We then heard the other call in PK Birds also. Then started to pick them out with our torches (red) with red eyes looking back at us before realising we could see them gliding above us regularly in the bright moonlight. Buoyant effortless flight. Both of us saw the birds multiple times. Birds just drifting/gliding over us and we did not observe wing beats. Birds seemed relatively small when perched but large in the air. Big wings? Birds mostly perched very high on a prominent branch when observed perched. All identification by sound, flying birds seen very clearly but probably not identifiable if we didn’t know what they were from sound. Could pick up baring on body and wings if we put light (red) on them. Perched birds mostly seen at some distance so mostly just eye shine and a size/shape silhouette. Sounds conclusive. Birds did not seem to mind our presence or lights (red) so we stayed with them enjoying them. Recordings to come.
