Observation details
This bird was foraging in close proximity with both little and great egret and a clear comparison of its bill structure, overall body size and leg coloration was made. This species has been seen and reported from this location several times in the past week. This bird was noticeably small than the great egret but was larger than the little egret. Its neck length was a little less than its body length. It foraged slower than the little and preferred to stand still with its neck stretched out at 45 degrees toward the ground while it waited its prey. It's head shaped was domed shaped and all yellowish bill was noticeably thickset with a very slight downward curved appearance along the center of the lower mandible. Its gape did not extend behind the eyes and ended with a more rounded point than the rather the pointed gape of the great egret that extended a thumbs width behind the eye.
