Media notes
Date and time of recording: 17 Feb 2024, 09:29 am Device: Cornell Lab's Merlin ID app on my cell phone Location and conditions: . This recording was made at Robinson Lake, located in Boundary County in the Northern Idaho panhandle, about two miles south of the Canadian border. The surface of the lake is frozen and snow covered. The temperature is cold, the sky is clear. This area is a dense coniferous forest. Standing at the shore of the lake, looking for birds to include in a checklist for the Great Backyard Bird Count 2024, all was completely silent. However, at one point a bird vocalization began. It was clearly quite a distance away from where I stood. I turned on the Sound ID option of the Merlin bird identification app. The sound seemed so far away, I wasn't sure if the app would pick up the sound, but it did, and it identified the repeated high-pitched hooting sound as a Northern Pygmy Owl. The sounds in this recording are faint, but they are there.
Observation details
EBird says on this checklist that Northern Pygmy Owl is “unreported.” This bird was identified using Merlin Sound ID, and that app identified the vocalization as Northern Pygmy Owl. I uploaded the Merlin Sound ID recording to document the vocalization, it accompanies this checklist. The bird sounded to be quite far away, and the high-pitched “hoots” are faint on the recording, but they are there. The vocalizations appear to match the examples given on the Audubon Bird Guide app for Northern Pygmy Owl.
