Observation details
Subspecies usually don't interest me, especially in the CAGO group. (It took me almost 10 years to see my first Cackling Goose from pure lack of interest). Today, however, a group of about 25 CAGOs in a much larger group caught my interest. They were much, much smaller than the surrounding birds, stayed together more or less, and seemed much more wary than all the others. At one point, they all got up and walked away together in a perfectly straight line. They're beaks, however, were not short enough to qualify as Cackling or Richardsons. So, I'm thinking that maybe they qualified as "Lesser" Canada Goose, based on Sibley's guide?? I attached a few blurry iPhone photos that don't really show a size comparison. Interesting. Here's a link to a SIbley article on the Lesser: https://www.sibleyguides.com/2008/11/lesser-canada-goose-in-the-northeastern-us/
