Observation details
Continuing bird found last week. Seen after about 3-4 minutes of waiting on sidewalk. I stood on the stone pavers on the street side of the sidewalk and the BBIH flew into the palo verde tree. It stayed perched there a majority of the time. Other times it was seen feeding on the nearby flowers, all on the street side of fencing. Very aggressive hummingbird. Chasing off nearby MODO, LEGO, HOFI at the feeders. Slightly larger than ANHU. Call was similar to a RCKI but with a buzzier/harsher tone. Almost a mix between RCKI and ANHU in my opinion. Bird had distinct bill towards base, but gets darker gray or black towards tip. Black eye with white ‘teardrop’ running behind. Overall, a stunning iridescent blue green body. Belly, breast, and throat have white mottled edging on the otherwise blue/green feather. Primaries a dull gray brown. Visible yellow pollen on bill. Primary coverts a darky dusky gray, contrasting heavily with uniform and broad light gray primaries. Rects have a a blueish, green tint with purple undertones. Outer 2 rects have gray edging. Overall tail shape is forked slightly. Big thanks to Kristin and David for alerting everyone and allowing visitors!
