Observation details
Observed perched, then it flew over pines & out of sight, returning in less than a minute with its prey. Prey was a bird with two, large, pale tail feathers (seen from below the tail of the prey) and a long bill (see photos). Watched Merlin almost completely pluck all feathers from its prey and consume every part, finishing with the legs and feet. Small, fast-flying falcon with pointed wings. Steely blue above, heavy, dense streaks below. Thin, pale eyebrow, weak mustache. Barred tail, squared tail tip. Observed perched in the oaks at the Bill Fike Teaching Unit, from this location: 35.742010,-78.700813.
