Observation details
Singing exuberantly from the very top of a pine tree, shortly after dawn. He went silent when the Merlin flew in. He sang from another tree, and was displaced by a curve-billed. He went to the top of a yucca across the street and sang there for a long time before finally being displaced by a curve billed again. Without bins, it looked like he was singing with his bill closed, with bins I could see the bill was slightly open, but certainly not wide open. His bill was shorter and straighter than the curve-billed thrasher’s, and his eye was yellowish rather than orange. I had good looks at both species and I could not make a call on the base of the lower mandible.
