Observation details
First heard singing at an estimated 100m range on 02/05/2024. Bird moved away in response to playback/whistling but continues to sing. Bird followed for approximately 400m before detected singing. returned to the same area on 05/05/2024, and found singing again without using playback, this time from its nest using a thermal camera at c20m range. Bird then observed to continue to sing from the nest platform for 10 minutes uninterrupted before moving on to a range of other songposts within 100m of the nest. Bird appeared to be unpaired, and singing much later into the morning than the paired H. whittakeri we had been seing the previous weeks at Cristalino Jungle Lodge. Similarly a pair of H. macularius discovered approx 2km away on 07/02/24 refused to sing in response to playback at 08:30-08:45 but did respond immediately to call.
