Observation details
*rare; continuing Western Meadowlark first found by Joe Mathis on 20 December. Identified to species by the extent of white in the retrices (R6 and R5 entirely/mostly white with R4 only partially white) as well as thinner dark banding on the central retrices not joining at the shaft. Overall more drab coloration also supports the identification. The meadowlark was seen in the vicinity of the yard at the point of land near the outlet of Deer Creek, located at: 55.683427, -132.521074. It would feed on the ground, sometimes walking in stands of salmonberry or alder, and also perch up in nearby trees. At one point it perched on the power lines near the Thorne Bay Harbor Office for a lengthy period of time. This is the same general area where Joe Mathis has been most frequently seeing the bird, but there were a few days where it fed below his deck feeders on Cedar Ln. When perched up, the meadowlark often gave fairly quiet, low-pitched 'chuck' contact calls.
