Observation details
Photos of 2 males swimming behind group of Lesser Scaup in calm cove by boat ramphttps://www.flickr.com/photos/59990836@N07/16623805520/. One male is probably the same one described last week from Columbia County side of Hwy 47 bridge, in breeding plumage with rounded green-sheen head that at times showed highest point near forehead, and prominent broad black nail extending onto bill. One note - the barring on the back does appear to extend onto the white flanks. Other individual it was swimming with appears to be a male in plumage transition, with green-sheen head that at times showed highest point near forehead, and prominent broad black nail extending onto bill. White wingstripe clearly visible when swimming, contrasting with dark wing and brownish flanks. A very odd & distinct looking bird.
