Observation details
In the field, these birds usually appeared entirely black, but at close range and in good light, the deep vinaceous color of the head and bright red eyering were evident. The creases on the side of the neck evident in this photo are the "scales" which are actually raised feather edges which give this species its name. Aptly described by eBird as having "a proclivity for perching high in trees while still not in clear view." Note the bare patch of orange skin around the eye. They are endemic to the Caribbean except for Jamaica. Formerly known as Red-necked Pigeon and placed in the genus "Columba."
