Observation details
Mike found what was certainly the most interesting bird of the day: a likely third-cycle THAYER'S GULL. We think it's not a Kumlien's because: - Too much black in wingtips - Mantle too dark We think it's not a Herring because: -The rather greenish, delicate-looking bill with small gonys angle -Dark eye would also be unusual -The bird was smaller and more finely proportioned in direct comparisons with nearby Herring Gulls Unfortunately we were reshuffling our positions when the gulls decided to do the same, so we were never able to refind the bird or see it in flight. UPDATE: record rejected as THGU (probably correctly) by NYSARC
