Observation details
Saw one clearly, though briefly. Small babbler, reminded me of Abbott’s but smaller; warm buffy color overall, with whitish throat and short gray patch at the eye. Didn’t see it long enough to note whether there were any spots on the throat. I’d heard some unfamiliar calls, but wasn’t sure they were this species. So I listened to a recording of Spot-throated calls to refresh myself, and this bird quickly popped up in front of me. It soon disappeared, but then another Spot-throated across the path sang once. I then tried playback of Spot-throated song, and the second bird began to sing almost constantly for the next 40 minutes, while I tried desperately to get a glimpse of it. All I saw were a few quick glimpses of movement on or near the ground, but this bird never came into a spot where I could see it. I did record nearly 2 minutes of its song, and when I did playback of that, the bird sang in stereo, copying the song in the recording, but about a half-second behind. The bird was only a few meters away, and stayed in the same tiny patch of thicket the entire time. Life bird.
