Observation details
Reporting as YBSA but there's still open debate about hybrid status -- will update once consensus is reached. Continuing in the tops of the tall oaks around (38.543335, -121.701581); I spent a full hour on the bird and it never came lower than about 50' off the ground. Looks almost perfect for YBSA -- broad mottled pattern on back, red throat with black border (definitely thinner on the left, but still complete in terms of feathering), strong black-and-white facial stripes, only the tiniest hint of faint red on the nape. Photos from every angle I could get. Updating to Yellow-bellied/Red-naped as the expert consensus is that this bird appears mostly like YBSA but could very well have RNSA ancestry, and is best left unidentified.
