Observation details
Similar in size to the domestic ducks, shorter neck, small bill. We first thought this is a Cackling, but we referred to and compared using the Sibley Birds West book, pages 6-7. Page 7 does say "Some Canada Geese from northern breeding populations can be small, approaching Cackling Goose." So we counted it as Canada on 12/22/23. We still wondered if it was a Cackling or simply a smaller Canada Goose (and it still could be the smaller subspecies or a hybrid). However, recent 2024 reports are confirming it is a Cackling.
