Observation details
Including one 1cy Slaty-backed candidate. (Input welcome.) In view for only a couple minutes before heading SW out to sea against the wind with almost half the flock. Most salient features are pretty clear from the photos, although one that does not show up as well (due to the lack of clear pictures of the bird's back) is the presence of at least a couple contrastingly dark feathers in the right scapulars and perhaps the mantle, presumably second-generation contour feathers. Some of these are just barely visible in the last photo peeking out from behind the left wing; they were more clearly visible in the field as the bird flew directly away. These help point away from various hybrid combinations that can generate frosty-looking birds like this one and toward pale 1cy Slaty. Nevertheless this bird generally reads as very much on the pale side for classic Slaty and is probably best left as a slash for that reason.
