Observation details
Immature, continuing here since Sep 21. Widely chased, thanks to the generous homeowners allowing 100+ strangers access to their land. As I walked up, I was startled to discover that the gnome/wizard-and-hawk statue right next to the driveway was actually just a gnome/wizard statue with the target hawk sitting on its hat! The bird had been sitting so still, in the shade, in such an unexpected spot, that my brain had just assumed it was part of the statue. The bird didn't seem too phased that I was close; within 25 feet of it. I backed off several steps and it remained in place for another minute or so before flying over to the martin house pole. This was the second of many perches it chose around the farm area over the next half hour. It also spent extensive time walking around in the ground, in both the field next to the barn and at the edge of the pond, presumably looking for insects. As of at least Oct 7, the hawk was still present. See the visitation instructions on Ted Nichols's Sep 28 checklist.
