Observation details
Pair of red crossbills. Seen feeding on pitch pine seeds. See audio, confirmed as Type 4 by Tim Spahr. Female gathering nesting materials including lichen and returning to same location in pitch pine several times. Soft contact calls between the two. Male was singing from the top of a nearby pitch pine when female was bringing nesting material to the presumed nest site. The nest site in a pitch pine was in very thick cover on a branch (likely by design) in a relatively open area. See photos and recording. According to Matt Young, this is the 2nd ever confirmed breeding of Type 4 RECR in the Northeast, with the first being in the last couple of weeks in Pennsylvania. Their core zone of occurrence is in coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest and adjacent parts of British Columbia: https://finchnetwork.org/species/crossbills/red-crossbill-loxia
