Media notes
Intact spruce-fir forests at Mengbi Shan over 3900 meters or 12,800 feet elevation. Sichuan Jay inhabits this forest year-round and is the primary habitat type for breeding purposes.
Observation details
So excellent- wanted to see this species since I learned of it in college. They came from up the road down to where we set up for breakfast. Each jay would fly from one tree to another, flying to a lower part of the tree, before hopping from branch to branch upward to the top before launching to the next tree. They moved mostly single-file. They moved through the trees near us for a few minutes before moving onward, up and over the road. Size and shape not unlike Canada Jay. Over all sooty gray with blackish head. Contrasting pale yellowish bill. Two of the jays had apparent tail and wing molt; not sure about the third bird.
