Observation details
Used playback in plover area and one flew in. Dave and Kathy had three on beach out here yesterday. Based on some information Randy Moore shared a few years ago I thought this might be a merrelli ssp based on no yellow on breast, not super yellow on face like strigata would be, yellow supercilium fading to white in back. Here is what Randy said when I shared the photos with him: "I’d say it’s virtually certain it’s not strigata for the reasons you mention plus the color of the dorsal surface is that coldish gray-brown business. While it might be argued that yours is at the extreme end of what a really worn young male strigata might look like, my experience is that July-Aug. is the only time they might get even close to looking like yours. While it does tick all the boxes for merrilli, I’d be cautious about assigning positive ID- especially in your neck of the woods- just because of the possibility of some vagrant subspecies with which I’m not familiar.”
