Drake 1 or 2
Observation details
*Over an hour’s effort with the eider mega-raft produced at least three adult drakes. The first two drakes were identical; they had crisp, unmarked plumage, and were briefly observed together, while the third was visually distinct due to some dark splotching at the top of the neck. All drakes had the typical features; brighter yellow bill with reduced, thinner lobes, whiter cheek, subtly different head shape relative to dresseri. Digiscopes of at least two birds to be added. On the subject of hens; I was unable to definitively identify any borealis hens. I observed several hens with paler plumage that could have been borealis, but they were all too distant for bill scrutiny, not apparently different in structure from the surrounding dresseri, and not extreme in coloration (that is, they were paler than the average dresseri, but still within the realm of dresseri variation; no extreme pale borealis present).
